The city kicked off its festivities in honour of Saints Justus and Pastor this Tuesday with the speech from the president of the Cofradía de Nuestra Señora del Val at the Town Hall.
The Patron Saint Festivities of Alcalá de Henares in honour of Saints Justus and Pastor officially began this Tuesday, August 4, with the speech by Gema García, president of the Cofradía de Nuestra Señora del Val. The event was held in the Town Hall's Plenary Hall and was presided over by the mayor, Judith Piquet.
Before the speech, the mayor participated in the Cathedral Magistral in the traditional transfer of the ark containing the relics of the Saints to the main altar, as well as in the floral offering to the Patrons, which involved institutions, entities, and associations from the city. A mass officiated by the Bishop of Alcalá, Antonio Prieto Lucena, followed.
During her speech, Piquet highlighted that “the Festivities of the Saints unite tradition, culture, leisure, and devotion in a unique way.” “They are, above all, festivities with a lot of symbolic weight, more intimate and family-oriented, because they connect us with our Christian roots, with our origins as a city, and with our oldest neighbourhood traditions,” she added.
The mayor thanked Gema García for her speech, which she described as “so beautiful and so emblematic for Alcalá,” and acknowledged the work of the Cofradía throughout the year. She also expressed gratitude to the entities and groups participating in the celebrations and to the residents who contribute their work and talent.
Piquet invited residents and visitors “to enjoy these beloved and endearing festivities with good harmony and an open heart.” “Together we will live and show those who wish to visit us a celebration with memory, communion, respect, and fun,” she asserted, emphasising that this is how the city honours its history and traditions.
