Mayor Judith Piquet has visited the roadworks on Gran Canal street, in the Venecia neighbourhood, which involve an investment of over €500,000 and aim to improve mobility and accessibility.
The Mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, supervised this morning the asphalting work being carried out on Gran Canal street, one of the main thoroughfares in the Venecia neighbourhood. The project, which exceeds €500,000, is part of the 'Alcalá improves its neighbourhoods' plan, a programme that mobilises around €75 million across the city.
During the visit, Piquet was accompanied by Deputy Mayors Gustavo Severien and Cristina Alcañiz. The Mayor explained that the intervention responds to a "historic demand" from residents and will improve the connection between the Historic Centre, Tabla Pintora, Nueva Alcalá, and the banks of the Henares River.
The project includes the comprehensive renewal of sidewalks and roadway, with over 1,300 metres of accessible pavement and nearly 7,000 square metres of new asphalt. Additionally, architectural barriers are being removed and pedestrian spaces are being expanded without losing parking spaces, and even new ones are being added.
The works include adapting the sidewalks to current accessibility regulations, a key aspect in a neighbourhood with a high number of elderly residents. The sidewalks have been advanced at pedestrian crossings that have parallel or angled parking, improving visibility for pedestrians and reducing their distance on the roadway. All crossings have been lowered or levelled with the asphalt to facilitate transit for people with reduced mobility.
Piquet highlighted that the goal is for residents to "enjoy more accessible, safer, and friendlier streets for walking," as is already being done on other roads such as Avenida de Guadalajara, Núñez de Guzmán, Paseo del Val, or Teniente Ruiz.
The works are ongoing, and once completed, residents of the Venecia neighbourhood will have an accessible pedestrian route along the entire length of Gran Canal street.
