Mayor Jesús Moreno participates in the 1st Tree Cities of the World Europe Meeting, held in Málaga, where he presented the tree management of Tres Cantos to representatives from Washington, London, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo.
The mayor of Tres Cantos, Jesús Moreno, participated in the 1st Tree Cities of the World Europe Meeting, an international forum held in Málaga on September 23 and 24 under the slogan For a Borderless Urban Forest. The meeting is driven by the Arbor Day Foundation and the FAO, alongside Arbocity, AlberItalia, and Trees4Cities.
Moreno took part in a round table discussion on the role of key decision-makers and stakeholders, held in the Historic Botanical Garden of La Concepción. There, he shared the municipality's experience in conserving natural spaces and stated that Tres Cantos has 60,000 trees (1.08 per inhabitant), 30,000 seasonal flowers, and two million square metres of green areas.
Tres Cantos has grown from its origins with nature as one of its main elements of identity. Participating in a forum of this nature allows us to share our experience with cities from different countries, learn about other best practices, and continue incorporating new solutions,” emphasized Moreno.
The meeting was attended by representatives from countries such as the United States, Italy, Japan, and Brazil, and from cities like Washington, London, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. The event served to discuss urban forestry policies and green infrastructure and to learn about the advances of the Tree Cities of the World programme.
Tres Cantos' presence in Málaga comes after the municipality has renewed its recognition as a Tree City of the World for the second consecutive year, a distinction from the FAO and the Arbor Day Foundation that includes 283 cities from 24 countries, of which 21 are Spanish.
The management of urban trees requires planning, resources, and a long-term vision. The challenge is to ensure that the growth of cities and nature advance hand in hand, creating healthier, more sustainable spaces that are prepared for the future,” noted the mayor.
The municipal commitment to tree management will continue in 2027, when Tres Cantos will host the 6th edition of the Forum of Spanish Tree Cities, a meeting that will bring together municipalities and specialists in urban forest management.
