The Oscar Contigo Foundation celebrates its fourth edition in Valdemorillo on Sunday 27 September. There will be children's races, 5 and 10 km, music, paella, and activities for the whole family.
Valdemorillo will once again be the setting for the Solidarity Race for Children Without Cancer, which reaches its fourth edition on Sunday 27 September. The event, organised by the Oscar Contigo Foundation (OC), aims to raise funds for research against childhood cancer, the leading cause of disease-related mortality in children.
The mayor, Santiago Villena, has confirmed that he will participate in the event, which is not competitive. “We are proud to hold this event for the goal that drives its organisation: to raise funds to ensure research and the development of projects such as clinical trials for children with relapsed tumours and personalised medicine,” he stated.
The day will kick off with the distribution of t-shirts and race numbers, and will be filled with activities: children's races, live music, foam party, raffles, and a solidarity paella. The children's races will take place between 9:30 and 10:30 am, with distances ranging from 30 to 750 metres depending on the participants' age, up to 12 years old.
At 11:00 am, the main race will begin, with two routes: 5 or 10 kilometres for runners and 5 kilometres for Nordic walking. Before the start, there will be group warm-ups led by professional trainers and the presentation of trophies for the best individual fundraisers.
The proceeds, both from registrations and donations from those who cannot participate, will be entirely allocated to oncological paediatric research. Valérie Joly, mother of Oscar and president of the OC Foundation, emphasised that “every registration, every donation, and every person who joins this race brings us a little closer to the day when no child has to hear that there is nothing more to be done.”
The music will be provided by the group TRIBOO Pop, who will liven up the morning, and the BuddyPC avatar robot from the Foundation will also be presented. Participants will exchange their race number for a serving of solidarity paella from DIA and the runner's bag, which includes gifts from entities such as the Spanish Institute and BIC Graphic. The event will close at 1:30 pm with a magic show by Rubén del Toro.
The OC Foundation was born in the spring of 2023, driven by Valérie Joly and Martín Segado, whose son Oscar passed away at the age of 9 after battling a medulloblastoma for nearly six years. The Valdemorillo City Council continues to support this cause, as highlighted by the mayor, to “move forward united in hope and the desire to end childhood cancer.”
