The invited company to the National Theatre Festival for Female Directors 'Ciudad de Torrejón' presents 'Burladas', a play that gives voice to the silenced women of the Don Juan myth.
The National Theatre Festival for Female Directors 'Ciudad de Torrejón' includes in its programme the play 'Burladas', a theatrical proposal that revisits the Don Juan myth from a feminist perspective. The performance, by the invited company, will take place in the municipality, although the specific date and venue have not been specified by the organisation.
The plot follows Inés, a woman who, after years without engaging in relationships due to traumatic experiences with men, meets Juan and sleeps with him. From that encounter, the ghosts of all the women who were deceived by Don Juan Tenorio appear to her, and their stories distort her view of the contemporary Juan, making her question whether the man with whom she has started a bond is a deceiver or if she is just another deceived woman.
The text and direction are by Esther Berzal, who also acts in the piece alongside Cira Ascanio and David Soto Giganto. The work arises from the desire to give voice to historically silenced women through a scenic and physical re-reading of the Don Juan myths, as explained by the company in the project presentation.
The piece takes as its starting point five female figures from 'Don Juan Tenorio' and 'El Burlador de Sevilla' (Doña Ana, Tisbea, Isabela, Aminta, and Doña Inés) to make them converse with the present and with the real experiences of today's women. It thus delves into the historically deceived female body, constructing corporealities that traverse history, memory, and contemporary scene, to embody the echoes of the same question: how to break the mould of what has already been said?
The play features a broad technical and artistic team: direction consultancy by Liuba Cid, lighting by Miguel Ángel Camacho, set design by Pablo Menor, costumes by Paula Paterna, sound and musical composition by Alberto Vela, graphic design and poster by Mike Berasaluce, stage photography by Javier Naval, video and teaser by David González, and press management by María Díaz. The production direction is led by Evaristo Sánchez, with Diego Rioja as assistant, and distribution is handled by Emilia Yagüe Producciones.
The production is by Flexión Producciones, in co-production with Emilia Yagüe Producciones, Helarte, TIDI, and Meditea Teatro. The project has been developed in residencies at the Castillo-Palacio Magalia (INAEM) and at ROAD, the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain. Special thanks go to Fran Guinot.
This work, which has already been recognised in the theatrical field, is now presented in Torrejón de Ardoz as part of the festival's programming, which each year brings together emerging female directors.
