The regional channel will air a marathon on September 19 featuring four films shot in the Golden City set and will premiere the documentary 'The Magnificent Stranger' about that set.
On September 19, 8madrid TV dedicates its programming to Western cinema filmed in Hoyo de Manzanares during the 1960s. The cycle, titled ‘Magnificent Strangers’, brings together four films shot in the Golden City set and the television premiere of the documentary The Magnificent Stranger, directed by Miguel Ángel Guerra and Iván Karras.
The municipality then housed the largest permanent Western film set in Europe. More than a hundred shoots took place on its streets, and it was here that the spaghetti western phenomenon was born with Sergio Leone's Dollar Trilogy.
The day kicks off at 17:30 with The Seventh Cavalry (Alberto De Martino, 1965), the first film shot at Fort Jackstone, a structure with a six-meter-high palisade and 900 square meters. The script was penned by the director himself and Eduardo Manzanos, who was responsible for the construction of Golden City.
At 19:10, Trap for a Outlaw (Mario Maffei, 1966) will be aired, with Manzanos again on the script. This Italo-Spanish co-production reflects the cinematic activity unleashed in the area by the success of For a Fistful of Dollars (Sergio Leone, 1964).
The cycle continues at 20:50 with Four Bullets (Agustín Navarro, 1964). The buildings of Golden City and the granite crests of the mountains recreate a Texas town where a woman is tried for the murder of her husband; after she dies trying to escape from prison, her brother, Frank Dalton, seeks the real culprits.
Next comes the television premiere of the documentary The Magnificent Stranger (2024), which recovers the history of the set built in Hoyo de Manzanares.
The marathon concludes before midnight with The Death Squad (Fernando Cerchio, 1966), scheduled for 23:45. The Hoyo mountains appear in the panoramas of this story in which Colonel Lenox defends a border fort from the assaults of the Navajo Indians, with the help of Captain Clermont and his men.
