Villanueva de la Cañada showcases 18th-century Manila shawls at La Despernada

The La Despernada Cultural Centre hosts the exhibition 'The Route of the Manila Galleon' from September 9 to 30, featuring silk shawls from different eras, including one from the 18th-century Tang dynasty. Entry is free.

The La Despernada Cultural Centre in Villanueva de la Cañada is hosting the exhibition 'The Route of the Manila Galleon, the happy union between Asia, Latin America and Spain', a collection of shawls from various periods and styles that can be viewed from September 9 to 30.

Among the displayed pieces is an example from the Tang dynasty, dating back to the 18th century. The shawls are embroidered in silk and are exhibited fully opened, allowing visitors to appreciate their colours and the variety of motifs, such as dragons, flowers and butterflies.

The exhibition is complemented by other objects related to the trade route: lacquered boxes that transported the shawls, silver coins from the 16th century, a model of the galleon that covered the Manila-Acapulco route, and vintage postcards.

The exhibition is part of the Itiner Network of the Community of Madrid and entry is free. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 21:00, and Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.
