Aranjuez participates in the European campaign EUTreeTag 2026 with 10 trees that will carry informative signs about the CO₂ they store or the oxygen they produce. The initiative is presented this Friday with a label on a common elm in the Park of Spanish Aviation.
The City Council of Aranjuez has joined the second edition of the European campaign EUTreeTag 2026, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits that urban trees bring to cities. This edition includes 278 cities from 10 European countries and more than 1,000 trees will receive informative signs with quantified data about their ecosystem services.
The presentation in Aranjuez was carried out by placing one of these labels on a common elm (Ulmus minor) located in the Park of Spanish Aviation. The specimen was selected for its value: it is the first elm resistant to Dutch elm disease planted in the municipality, 12 years ago, as part of the Restoration of Iberian elms in the Tajo River basin project.
In total, Aranjuez will label 10 trees at various points in the locality. The signs will detail data such as the CO₂ stored, the oxygen provided annually by each tree, or the litres of runoff prevented, values calculated using the i-Tree Engine program.
In Spain, 20 entities are participating in the #EUTreeTag campaign, promoted by the Arbocity Association. The initiative is driven by thirteen European organizations specialized in urban forestry and takes place in Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Spain.
Aranjuez has maintained the recognition of Tree City of the World for three years, a distinction that values the management and enhancement of urban trees.
Residents will be able to consult the data of each labelled tree on the signs installed in the municipality.
