The Town Hall of Móstoles joins the international campaign #Light Up for Mito and will light up its facade in green on September 19, as part of World Mitochondrial Disease Week.
The facade of the Town Hall of Móstoles will be illuminated in green on September 19 to support the international campaign #Light Up for Mito, promoted by the Association of Families with Fatty Acid Beta-Oxidation Deficiency (BOAG). The initiative coincides with World Mitochondrial Disease Week, which this year is celebrated from September 14 to 20.
The aim of the lighting is to show support for those affected by these genetic diseases and their families, according to the local government. BOAG is the only association of its kind in Spain and works to raise awareness of a rare condition that can affect any organ and appear at any age.
Mitochondrial diseases are caused by alterations in the mitochondria, the cellular structures responsible for producing the energy that cells need to function. When this process fails, complex, severe, and highly variable conditions can arise, significantly limiting the quality and life expectancy of those affected.
It is estimated that 1 in 200 people may carry mutations related to these diseases, although a large part of society is still unaware of their existence, according to data held by the association.
The lighting of the municipal building will be maintained throughout the day on September 19, alongside awareness-raising events taking place in various locations during those days.
