The 2026/2027 school year has kicked off this Monday in Rivas with the return to class of 10,816 children from nursery schools and primary schools. Of these, 1,184 are starting the first cycle of Early Childhood Education and 9,632 the second cycle of Early Childhood and Primary Education. Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, 6,325 students from Secondary, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training will join the ten centres that provide these stages in the municipality.
The main novelty of this school year is the air-conditioning of nine educational centres, financed with €14.2 million from the municipal budget. The works have replaced gas heating with an aerothermal system that provides both cooling and heating, and include ventilation with energy recovery and consumption monitoring. The centres benefiting are the nursery schools Luna Lunera, Pippi Längstrum, Platero and Rayuela, the Casita de Niños El Dragón, and the public schools Jarama, Las Cigüeñas, Mario Benedetti, and El Olivar.
In four of these schools, smart LED lighting has also been installed with presence sensors and regulation according to external light. The second phase of the air-conditioning plan will be addressed next summer with the remaining centres, according to the Rivas Council.
The Council has also allocated €600,000 for summer improvements in public schools. Among the actions are the expansion of the Early Years playground at CEIP José Saramago, the renovation of bathrooms at CEIP Hans Christian Andersen, El Olivar, Jarama, and El Parque, and the repair of the pavement at the entrance to CEIP La Escuela.
The municipality has 16 public schools, 10 nursery schools (four municipal), and six high schools, including the new IES Margarita Salas. 93.5% of Early Years and Primary students study in public centres, a percentage that rises to 95.3% in Secondary and Baccalaureate.
The municipal service ‘En bus al cole’ increases this year by 17% the number of users and expands its routes to 13.
