The Rivas-Vaciamadrid City Council has completed the installation of seven new SOS posts, bringing the city to a total of nine emergency devices to prevent gender violence in public spaces.
The Rivas-Vaciamadrid City Council has finished installing seven new SOS posts, a security system designed to prevent situations of gender violence against women. With these devices, the locality now has a total of nine such elements distributed across various points in the municipality.
The new posts have been placed in the Linear Park, Asturias Park (next to Covibar Avenue), Montarco Park, Ignacio Zuloaga Street, Juan de la Cierva Street, Charlie Hebdo Park, and Bellavista Park. The selection of locations was made in coordination with the Municipal Women's Council, which participated in a visit to determine the most suitable places, thus incorporating the perspectives and experiences of women regarding public space.
This measure is part of the municipal government's urban planning policies with a feminist perspective, aimed at providing more security in areas where women may feel more vulnerable. However, anyone in an emergency situation can use these posts.
The operation is simple: by pressing the button, a priority alarm is generated at the Local Police control centre, an acoustic and visual siren is activated, and real-time communication is established with the officers. Additionally, the integrated camera transmits live video, allowing for an assessment of the severity of the situation and coordination of resources such as medical services or municipal services.
Of the seven new posts, three have been funded by the municipal budget, as part of the smart city advancement works coordinated by the Department of Innovation and Modernisation, at a cost of 22,318.41 euros. The rest is part of the 'Rivas, Smart Tourist Destination' project, funded by the EU through the Next Generation Funds, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and coordinated with the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and SEGITTUR.
The devices are integrated into the municipal communications network via fibre optics and connected to the Local Police's video surveillance systems. They operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, are weather-resistant, and comply with cybersecurity and data protection standards.
According to the City Council, the presence of these posts contributes to increasing the perception of safety and the public's confidence in using parks, squares, pedestrian routes, and sports facilities. The posts are properly identified, although integrated into the urban environment to avoid creating a sense of permanent alarm.
