Nine specimens from Rivas-Vaciamadrid have renewed their label in the European EUTreetag 2026 campaign, which highlights mature urban trees for the services they provide. The locality participates alongside 16 entities and municipalities in Spain.
Nine unique trees from Rivas-Vaciamadrid have renewed their recognition in the European EUTreetag 2026 campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the value of urban trees, especially mature ones. The first edition was in 2024.
In Europe, there are over a thousand trees classified as unique in 278 cities across Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Spain. Each one has an informative label explaining the ecosystem services it provides.
The benefits recorded on the labels have been quantified using the i-Tree engine program and include the CO2 stored, the oxygen generated by each tree per person per year, or the litres of runoff it prevents.
In Rivas, the trees that have renewed their recognition include two holm oaks in the area of Olivar de la Partija; an elm and a poplar in Parque Montarco; another elm on Espiga Street; a third elm at the Casco Antiguo swimming pool; and a cypress at the roundabout between Avenida de la Zarzuela and Calle de los Picos de Urbión, as well as two other cypresses in the Cementerio Municipal.
Together with the City Council of Rivas, up to 16 entities and municipalities in Spain participate in the #EUTreeTag campaign, which in Spain is promoted by the Arbocity association.
The tree inventory of Rivas reached 121,800 specimens in 2025, including urban trees and those in the Mazalmadrit park. In recent years, over 40,000 trees have been planted in the Scania forest, on the other side of the A-3.
