The mayor, Luis Partida, has handed over 2,104 euros raised during the Patron Saint Festivities in honour of Santiago Apostle to the association STOP-FA Ataxia de Friedreich. The funds come from the solidarity aperitif organised by the Town Hall with four local groups.
The mayor of Villanueva de la Cañada, Luis Partida, presented this morning to Gloria Soguero Martínez, a local resident and representative of the association STOP-FA Ataxia de Friedreich in Spain, the 2,104 euros raised during the recent Patron Saint Festivities in honour of Santiago Apostle.
The amount was obtained from the sale of food and drink at the solidarity aperitif, an event organised by the Town Hall in collaboration with the groups Los Cucos, Los Tuuusos, Los Despernaos, and Las Katas.
I want to thank the groups and all the residents who, once again, have wanted to contribute to this initiative. Every act of solidarity counts and helps us raise awareness of this disease and support those who live with it daily, both patients and families.
Representatives from the four groups and councillors from the Municipal Corporation also attended the handover event.
STOP-FA was founded by relatives and individuals affected by Friedreich's Ataxia. The entity funds research projects and therapies to advance the cure for this degenerative disease, and develops crowdfunding campaigns, solidarity events, and gene therapy projects.
Friedreich's Ataxia is a hereditary and degenerative disease that damages the nervous system, affecting the spinal cord and the nerves responsible for movement. Symptoms usually appear in childhood or adolescence and progress over time, leading to a loss of autonomy, which forces many patients to use wheelchairs.
