Local athlete David Gala and José Antonio Diestro have won the gold medal in the first edition of the Mediterranean Games featuring padel, by defeating the Italian pair in Taranto.

The local sportsman David Gala has been crowned champion in the debut of padel at the Mediterranean Games, held in Taranto. Together with José Antonio Diestro, he represented Spain in this first edition with the presence of the discipline and achieved gold after defeating the Italians Álvaro Montiel and Flavio Abbat with scores of 7-6 and 6-4.

The victory has had special significance in Valdemorillo, the hometown of the player, who sees one of its sports talents achieving an international milestone. The mayor, Santiago Villena, has congratulated the champion and extended the recognition to his family.

We are very proud of David for seeing him crown this sports milestone, demonstrating his great level, which places him among the best in Spanish padel and makes him an example of effort and perseverance for so many other young people,” the mayor stated.

The City Council has reiterated its congratulations to the athlete “for taking the name of our town to the highest level with this victory that is so significant for all.”
