The Canine Unit of the Local Police of Getafe incorporates ‘Lucas’, a breed of braco dog. With him, the group now has four dogs and is preparing for the arrival of two more.

The Local Police of Getafe now has four dogs in its Canine Unit following the addition of ‘Lucas’, a braco breed. The other three are Harald, a Belgian Malinois; Dona, a German shepherd; and Vega, a springer spaniel.

The unit is awaiting the addition of a springer spaniel, which is currently in training, and another Belgian shepherd expected for next year.

The dogs work alongside officers in prevention and security tasks. Their presence is common in the operations of the Neighbourhood Police, who patrol on foot through the streets, as well as in shopping centres and public transport. They also conduct inspections in schools and public buildings in the city, and participate in vehicle checks during alcohol and drug control operations.

On another note, the Local Police, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic, carried out a special campaign for monitoring and controlling distractions while driving between October 5 and 11 in the eleven neighbourhoods of the municipality. During the operation, 1,671 vehicles were monitored and 27 fines were issued.

The improper use of mobile phones was the most frequent offence, with 22 sanctions. The rest were related to the use of helmets or headphones, manipulation of screens or navigators, and other behaviours that distract the driver.

From the Citizen Security delegation, they remind that common distractions also include lighting or putting out a cigarette, as well as fatigue and sleep. These behaviours are associated with the majority of traffic accidents, especially those with fatalities.
