The national amateur theatre festival ‘El Moscardón’ celebrates a new edition in San Fernando de Henares from 19 September to 4 October with six free performances at the Federico García Lorca Municipal Theatre.
The National Amateur Theatre Festival ‘El Moscardón’ returns to San Fernando de Henares with six stage proposals that will be performed at the Federico García Lorca Municipal Theatre between 19 September and 4 October. This year's edition has received 67 works from companies across eight autonomous communities, from which six have been selected, along with three others as reserves.
Four of the selected companies come from the Community of Madrid (Alcalá de Henares, Getafe, Coslada, and again Alcalá), while the other two come from Salamanca and Alicante. The programme combines classical and contemporary theatre, musicals, drama, and comedy, with productions ranging from the works of Lope de Rueda to a piece about the historical memory of the Agricultural Penitentiary Colony of Tefía.
The Councillor for Culture, Pablo Sanz, has highlighted the significance of the festival: “El Moscardón is already a benchmark and a festival that enjoys great prestige, something reflected in both the high number of proposals received and their quality.” He also emphasised “the variety of the selected programme, with very different proposals and genres for all audiences and tastes.”
All performances are free. Tickets can be collected on the same day as each performance at the theatre box office, starting two hours before the show begins.
The programme kicks off on Saturday 19 September at 20:00 with ‘Entrepasos’ by the Maru-Jasp company (Alcalá de Henares), a journey through the texts of Lope de Rueda featuring theatre, dance, and poetry. On Sunday 20 at 19:00, it continues with ‘The Wedding of the Petit Bourgeois’ by Teatro Al Alba (Getafe), a satirical comedy by Bertolt Brecht about the hypocrisies of bourgeois life.
On Saturday 26 at 20:00, Métrica Pura (Salamanca) presents ‘5 Seconds and 120 Kilos’, a bittersweet comedy about two neighbours who meet during a night of confinement. On Sunday 27 at 19:00, La Locandiera Teatro (Alcalá de Henares) revisits in ‘Tefía: Vagrants and Delinquents’ the memory of the penitentiary colony in Fuerteventura where homosexuals were imprisoned during Franco's regime.
On Friday 2 October at 20:00, ‘Bad Girls, the Musical’ by the Cultural Association Somnis (Coslada) arrives, telling the story of Cady Heron in an American high school. The festival concludes on Saturday 3 October at 20:00 with ‘The Vigil of the Brush’ by Teatro en Construcción (Elche), a defence of art against oppression in a world where museums have been destroyed.
The Award Ceremony and Presentation of the New Season will take place on 4 October, bringing this edition to a close.
