Elena Igelmo, a student at Instituto Público José Hierro in Getafe, has completed a stay at Space Center Houston of NASA after being selected in the educational challenge 'Mars Challenge'.

'Mars Challenge' is an initiative by the municipality to encourage vocations in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) disciplines among young people, through teamwork and project resolution. In the edition in which the student participated, more than 150 students from Getafe competed, divided into 25 teams with proposals focused on space exploration.

After the evaluation phase, held at the headquarters of the Local Employment and Training Agency (ALEF), Elena and her partner David received a special mention that included a visit to the facilities of the American space center. Elena has already made the trip, and David will do so in the next call.

During her stay, the student participated in training activities alongside international students and learned how technical teams and engineers work at the space base. As Elena herself explains:

The first day they told me at school, I never would have imagined being here.

The third edition, under the slogan “Getafe, Capital of Mars”, will take place on November 3, 4, and 5 in the municipality and will once again invite students from local educational institutions. Participants will need to propose technological and scientific solutions to environmental and social challenges, using space research as a reference.
