The Aranjuez City Council will apply preventive and control treatments against the red weevil in 35 Canary palms on September 9, 10, and 11, from 8:00 to 16:00 hours.
The Aranjuez City Council begins this Wednesday a new campaign of phytosanitary treatments against the red weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) in the municipal Canary palms. The work will take place on September 9, 10, and 11 from 8:00 to 16:00 hours.
The plan covers all 35 units of Phoenix canariensis in the municipality. It also extends to other specimens located near areas of infestation detected since 2023. Specifically, 26 Phoenix canariensis will be treated, five of them in Las Aves and Las Olivas and one inside the CEIP San Isidro school; two Trachycarpus on Príncipe Street, and several small Chamaerops at the end of Avenida de Las Artes.
In 15 of these specimens, an endotherapy treatment will also be applied, a technique that involves injecting a solution directly into the trunk so that it is distributed through the palm's vascular system.
The City Council asks citizens to respect the cordoned-off areas during the work. As this is a localized and individual application for each specimen, residents do not need to take any special measures.
From the City Council, they remind private palm owners of the importance of reporting the detection of the red weevil or symptoms compatible with its infestation. They can write to infraestructuraverde@aranjuez.es to improve the detection and control of the pest in the municipality.
