The Getafe City Council began work on Monday to restore two-way traffic to the livestock road in Perales del Río, with an investment of one million euros and a four-month timeline.
The Getafe City Council launched the project on Monday to recover two-way traffic on the livestock road in Perales del Río. The initial works involve the removal of wooden bollards that separate the vehicle circulation area from the gravel area, as well as the area designated for bicycles and pedestrians.
During this first phase, which is expected to last around a week, the road will remain open to traffic. After that, it will be closed at different times, allowing passage only when it does not pose a risk to the safety of workers and drivers, according to the council.
The works, which have a total estimated duration of 4 months, involve an initial investment of 1,000,000 euros, fully funded by the Getafe City Council. The mayor, Sara Hernández, explained that the governing team decided to bear the cost because the Community of Madrid does not provide funding, and emphasised that the priority is to improve the connectivity of the neighbourhood and ensure dignified mobility for residents.
We are going to restore two-way traffic to the road, as we have been demanding alongside the entities of Perales and its residents, with whom we have worked together, deciding that the Getafe City Council will bear the full cost of the works, since the Community of Madrid does not provide funding, because we are clear that the priority is to improve the connectivity of the neighbourhood and guarantee residents dignified mobility,” Hernández stated.
The new configuration of the road must meet the conditions imposed by the Community of Madrid in its resolution last June, which requires maintaining the bollards and limiting speed to 20 km/h. The City Council proposed months ago to the regional administration to restore two-way traffic due to the continuous delays in the construction of the roundabout on the M-301.
The council has expedited the procedures with the services affected by the work, which will involve the temporary closure of the road, as well as with entities and farmers in the area. Improvements have already been made over the summer on Madrid and Leganés streets, which are being resurfaced, in the access to the Los Molinos neighbourhood via Carpinteros street, and in the parking lot of the municipal pool in Perales del Río.
This action puts an end to a long ordeal for residents, which began in 2021, when the Community of Madrid limited the road to one-way traffic following the damage caused by storm Filomena. The measure was presented as provisional, pending the construction of a roundabout for access from the M-301, but five years later, that infrastructure has yet to progress. Therefore, the City Council has taken the initiative to offer a partial solution while continuing to demand definitive solutions such as a parallel road to the livestock road, the M-301 roundabout, its connection to the Los Olivos Industrial Area, and the arrival of the Metro to Perales.
The works will improve mobility in Perales del Río and El Caserío. The City Council will provide timely updates on traffic closures over the coming months.
