The Getafe City Council has installed a large pergola at the El Bercial Fairgrounds, featuring 16 arches and 12 shaded areas, to improve the climate comfort for residents.
The Getafe City Council, through its Maintenance department, has installed a large pergola at the El Bercial Fairgrounds. The structure, composed of 16 large arches that create 12 large shaded areas, is now available for residents, who will also find new benches underneath it.
The project, which involved an investment of 314,600 euros, includes the compaction of the fairground's gravel ground and the installation of backlit signage. The aim is to provide a more comfortable resting space, especially during the hottest months.
The Maintenance Councillor, Roberto Fernández, explained that “this project is part of all the initiatives we are implementing in the city, introducing measures to make it more pleasant, modernising it, and adapting it to offer greater climate comfort to residents.”
The pergola at El Bercial is part of a broader plan by the City Council to create climate shelters at various points in the city. Among the measures already implemented is the new children's fountain next to the chapel in the San Isidro Park, which will be complemented with new benches and the replacement of the shade reed in that same park, as well as in Victoria Kent Square, Los Espartales, and Los Molinos.
Last summer, a children's fountain was also installed on Huelva Street, for the families of Juan de la Cierva, which added to the walkable fountains in San Sebastián Square and Arboleda Street, and the children's fountain on Cataluña Street.
Additionally, Getafe has set up several climate shelters in municipal spaces this summer. The Civic Centres of La Alhóndiga and Las Margaritas offer activities for all ages; the Getafe Youth Space has opened its doors with technological resources; and the Senior Citizens department has expanded its programming during July and August with 455 places across 47 groups.
