The municipality, declared an International Zone of Culture of Peace, is organising a day on September 20 with a round table, stories, music, and the planting of the Peace Tree.
Manzanares el Real will celebrate International Peace Day on September 20 with a programme that will range from a round table on migration to children's activities and a collective mural. The municipality, recognised as an International Zone of Culture of Peace, aims to advocate for coexistence, disarmament, and human rights through a day open to all residents.
The organisation is managed by the Peace Culture Neighbourhood Council, which has prepared an agenda that combines reflection with cultural and artistic participation. The goal, according to the Town Hall, is to address issues such as diversity, migration, and the fight against racism, involving all ages.
The day will kick off at 10:30 am with a round table on migrants and refugees, featuring representatives from CEAR, Open Arms, Karibu, Caminando Fronteras, and Laura. During the meeting, which will last until 12:00 pm, discussions will focus on the origins of racism and the differences between refugees and migrants.
For the little ones, there will be stories from around the world with Yoana, Manzacuentos, and Ana Cristina Herrera, as well as traditional games from different countries and a painting activity with Jose. Associations will also have their space: ARBA will organise a workshop on the trees of the world and will participate in the planting of a tree.
The stage will host performances by Aka Baile, DJ Static Dance, as well as proposals from Cuba, Venezuela, and 'Quejido por Palestina'. There will also be testimonies from migrants who have arrived in the municipality and those who have had to leave. In the afternoon, attendees will be able to join in the creation of a mural for peace on the fronton and a parade to the Old Castle.
The closing will include the planting of the Peace Tree, a madroño or elm, alongside ARBA, as a symbol of the municipality's commitment to a culture of peace and environmental care. Additionally, until September 20, the call for the I Municipal Microstory and Illustration Contest is open, with the theme 'How to combat racism'. Interested parties can send their videos of up to 30 seconds explaining how to fight against racism to the email address provided by the Town Hall.
