The Móstoles City Council has launched a preventive maintenance and unblocking plan for the stormwater drainage network and gutters. The actions are divided into three phases and begin at the highest risk of flooding.
The Móstoles City Council, through the Department of Security, Emergencies and Environment, has activated the preventive maintenance, cleaning and unblocking plan for the city's stormwater drainage network and gutters in anticipation of rain in the coming months. The aim is to maintain the capacity for water collection and evacuation and reduce the risk of flooding on roads and underpasses.
A prior assessment has detected the accumulation of leaves, needles, soil, sludge, plant debris and other waste that diminish the network's capacity. The Mayor of Móstoles, Manuel Bautista, along with the head of Emergencies and Civil Protection, Raúl Esteban, visited calle Moraleja de Enmedio on Wednesday, one of the points included in the plan, to check the state of the stormwater drainage network.
The interventions will be carried out in three phases according to priority criteria: potential impact on infrastructure, existence of underpasses or low points, recurrence of blockages and loss of collection capacity during heavy rain episodes.
The first phase will focus on the highest priority points. The work will be carried out in several areas of the Arroyo de la Reguera, around calle Esteban Terradas and the junction with calle Simón Hernández, as well as in the underpass of RENFE on calle Abogados de Atocha. This will include the removal of plant debris and sediments, cleaning of grates and collection elements, and checking their functionality.
The second phase will address the roundabout at Camino de Leganés with avenida de la ONU and in the streets Burdeos, Niza, Montecarlo, Osa Mayor and Moraleja de Enmedio. Here, gutters, wells, access points, sumps and grates will be opened and cleaned, as well as the removal of waste and unblocking of connections.
The third phase, of a preventive and peripheral nature, will take place around the Recinto Ferial and on avenida Iker Casillas, in the section near the pools of the Polideportivo Andrés Torrejón. Soil, sludge and sediments will be removed, collection elements will be cleaned, and runoff paths will be checked.
Upon completion of the work, the City Council will conduct a general review of the intervened points to verify their proper functioning and will establish a specific monitoring program during periods with a higher likelihood of heavy rainfall and during times of the year when the accumulation of leaves and needles increases.
The aim of the plan is to keep the collection and drainage elements in optimal condition, reduce the likelihood of flooding on roads and underpasses, and minimise potential impacts on people, traffic and infrastructure during heavy rainfall episodes.
The plan will be implemented over the coming months, before and during the rainy season. Residents can check the areas included in each phase through municipal channels.
