The Casa de Juventud in Valdemorillo will host classes on Friday afternoons from October. The course, for children from 8 years old and young people, costs 15 euros a month thanks to financial support from the Community of Madrid.
The Youth Department of Valdemorillo resumes the chess course 'Checkmate' in October, an activity aimed at children aged 8 and above and young people, held in one of the classrooms of the Casa de Juventud on Friday afternoons. Registrations are still open and will remain until all available spots are filled.
The price is 15 euros a month per participant, a fee that is maintained thanks to financial backing from the Community of Madrid, through the Department of Family, Youth and Social Policy.
Participants learn the rules of the game and work on concentration and logical reasoning, as well as strategies to anticipate their opponent's moves. The Councillor for Youth and Sports, Eva Ruiz, points out that chess has a social and educational dimension.
It is a great opportunity to improve their knowledge in order to tackle moves while trying to foresee those of the opponent
Ruiz also highlights that the activity provides "at least for a few hours, a digital disconnection, which is so necessary among the youngest, allowing them to enjoy an educational and leisure activity without being glued to any screen."
The course remains one of the first activities to kick off the municipal agenda after the summer. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE) recognise this game as a sport.
Classes are held at the Casa de Juventud in Valdemorillo on Friday afternoons starting in October. Interested individuals can formalise their registration until spots run out.
