Getafe City Council has begun urban regeneration works on Doctor Barraquer Street, between Cataluña and Avenida de España, in the Juan de la Cierva neighbourhood. The project will last approximately two months and will transform the street into a pedestrian priority platform.
The Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMSV) of Getafe has started the urban regeneration works on Doctor Barraquer Street, in the section between Cataluña Street and Avenida de España, in the Juan de la Cierva neighbourhood. The work will last for about two months, following summer works that included sanitation and the electrical distribution network.
The Councillor for Housing, Gema Cáceres, explained the scope of the intervention:
This intervention promotes a unique platform that facilitates pedestrian mobility and improves accessibility, while reorganising the space to provide more usable area for residents. New green areas, trees, resting spaces, and a drinking water fountain will also be incorporated.
The project includes improvements to pedestrian routes, the creation of new leisure areas, and the addition of vegetation and trees to provide shade and reduce temperatures. Pavements, lighting, urban furniture, and other elements will also be renewed. For the definition of the materials to be applied in the public space, the City Council has collaborated with the Eduardo Torroja Institute of CSIC.
This initiative is part of the Next Generation EU funds and the Recovery and Transformation Plan of the Spanish Government, within the Programmed Rehabilitation Residential Environments (ERRP), and is part of Getafe's urban rehabilitation and regeneration strategy.
The City Council maintains a municipal urban regeneration policy to improve the oldest neighbourhoods and prepare their residential and public spaces for the challenges of climate change. The Urban Planning, Maintenance, and EMSV departments work together to incorporate climate adaptation criteria into various actions, in line with the Getafe Rehabilitates strategy and the municipal Urban Agenda. The EPIU Getafe Healthy Homes methodology, developed in the city in recent years, serves as a reference for incorporating a comprehensive view of the social, environmental, and urban conditions of the neighbourhoods.
Residents of Juan de la Cierva will see how Doctor Barraquer Street changes configuration over the next two months, with a unique platform that prioritises pedestrians and facilitates access to local businesses.
