The Civil Protection Group of Getafe is hosting a 20-hour course on cartography and orientation for volunteers from across Spain from September 18 to 20. The training, organised by the National School of Civil Protection, is being held at the Local Employment and Training Agency.

The Civil Protection Group of Getafe is holding a course aimed at volunteers from across Spain titled 'Introduction to Cartography and Situational Awareness for Civil Protection Volunteers' from September 18 to 20. The training is organised by the National School of Civil Protection and is taking place at the facilities of the Local Employment and Training Agency of the Getafe City Council.

The course, coordinated by the National Association of Civil Protection Volunteer Groups (ANAV), aims to enhance collaboration and support from volunteers to emergency services. According to the organisation, a more effective first response facilitates decision-making for coordinators and emergency managers.

The training is in-person, with 20 hours spread over morning and afternoon sessions. It includes theoretical presentations, lectures, individual and group work, as well as several field outings. One of these consists of a full-day orientation exercise.

Topics covered include the use of compasses and GPS, basic cartography concepts, interpretation of cartographic representations, aerial images and photographs, fundamentals of orientation and the Global Positioning System, as well as digital cartography computer resources. The programme also addresses the application of this knowledge to terrestrial navigation on the ground.

With this initiative, Getafe provides training for Civil Protection volunteers to help them interpret and apply cartographic information during an emergency. The course is being held at the headquarters of the Local Employment and Training Agency of the municipality.
