Civil Protection and Madrid 112 activate the alert for the heatwave starting this Wednesday. The Sierra de Madrid is at Level 2 (high risk) and the rest of the areas at Level 1.
The General Directorate of Civil Protection and the Security and Emergency Agency Madrid 112 activated the warning on Wednesday, September 2, for the heatwave that will affect the region until Friday. The Health Department anticipates a progressive thermal increase in the coming days.
The Sierra de Madrid is at Level 2 (high risk), with temperatures rising from 35.0° this Wednesday to 37.1° on Thursday and 37.7° on Friday. In the rest of the areas, the level is 1 (caution): in the metropolitan area and Henares, temperatures will rise from 36.0° to 38.8° on Friday, and in the South, Vegas, and West areas, the highs will go from 35.9° to 38.8°.
The maximum ultraviolet index forecast for today is 7 (high), so it is recommended to use appropriate sun protection.
Authorities are urging special attention to the child population, elderly people, athletes, and exposed workers. Recommendations include drinking at least 2 litres of water a day even if not thirsty, avoiding alcohol and drinks with caffeine or sugar, and reducing outings and physical activity during peak sunlight hours.
At home, it is advisable to wear light clothing, a cap, and sunscreen, as well as to lower blinds and use awnings to keep cool.
