The Majadahonda City Council and AFA northwest have signed an agreement to provide guidance, cognitive stimulation, and psychological support to those affected and their caregivers until December. The locality has over 20,000 residents aged over 60 and around 1,900 residents with dementia.
The Majadahonda City Council has subsidised 10,000 euros to the Association of Relatives of People with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias (AFA northwest) to launch the programme “Accompaniment and psychosocial support for people and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” which will take place from September to December this year. The signing of the agreement coincides with the celebration this Monday 21 September of World Alzheimer’s Day.
The programme offers free guidance, psychosocial support, cognitive stimulation, and various activities to registered residents in Majadahonda with a medical diagnosis of cognitive decline, as well as to their families. The Department of Social Welfare, Family and Seniors will refer potential participants to AFA, which will assess them and establish an Individualised Intervention Plan, including family advice and individual psychological support.
The initiative aims to promote the functional and cognitive autonomy of people with dementia, reduce their dependence, and delay premature institutionalisation. It also addresses the family environment to lessen the burden on caregivers and their risk of social isolation.
With resources available for patients and their families, not only to slow the progression of cognitive decline but also to provide support to caregivers facing a very complex daily life, with a high personal and family cost,” said the mayor of Majadahonda, Lola Moreno.
The councillor for Social Welfare, Family and Seniors, Marina Arines, recalled other municipal initiatives in this line, such as the workshops “Active Minds”, with over 1,000 places per year, or the Plan against Unwanted Loneliness, with 108 measures.
In the coming weeks, participants and their families will attend the music therapy workshop “Sing and Remember” and therapeutic walks and mindfulness sessions in Monte del Pilar.
Majadahonda leads life expectancy in Spain with an average age of 87.08 years, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The municipality has over 20,000 people aged over 60 and it is estimated that more than 1,900 residents are affected by some type of dementia.
To commemorate the day, the mayor visited the information table that AFA has set up on Gran Vía. Additionally, a discussion talk has been scheduled at the Senior Centre “Reina Sofía” titled “The sooner you know, the more you can do: diagnosis matters” and information about resources and applications for mental exercises is offered in the Digital Accompaniment Space.
From this Monday 21 until Sunday 27 September, the Municipal Senior Centre hosts the initiative “The Tree of Memories”. The fountains and the façade of the City Hall will be illuminated in green this Monday.
