The XI solidarity march for World Alzheimer's Day runs through Móstoles from the AFAMSO headquarters to Plaza de España, where a manifesto is read. Mayor Manuel Bautista and Councillor Ángel Álvarez participate in the event.
Móstoles celebrated the 21st of September the XI edition of the solidarity march for World Alzheimer's Day, organised by the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients and Other Dementias of Southwest Madrid (AFAMSO) in collaboration with the City Council of Móstoles.
The route started at the AFAMSO headquarters on Azorín Street and continued along Benito Pérez Galdós Street, Avenida de Portugal, and Juan de Ocaña until it finished at Plaza de España. There, in front of the City Hall, a manifesto was read.
Attending the event were the Mayor of Móstoles, Manuel Bautista; the Councillor for Sports and Health, Ángel Álvarez; members of the Municipal Corporation, representatives of the associative fabric, and numerous residents.
The march aims to raise awareness among citizens and show support for those affected and their families,” according to the organisation.
AFAMSO is a non-profit association founded in Móstoles in 1999 by a group of relatives to support people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as their caregivers, in the southwest area of the Community of Madrid.
Alzheimer’s is the leading cause of dementia and accounts for up to 70% of cases. In Spain, around 1.2 million people suffer from the disease, and its impact reaches over 5 million when including family members and caregivers, according to data from the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s.
The neurodegenerative disease causes a progressive loss of neurons due to the abnormal accumulation of proteins in the brain, such as amyloid protein, and lesions like senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.
The event will be repeated every 21st of September, World Alzheimer’s Day, with the AFAMSO headquarters on Azorín Street as the starting point for future convocations.
