The Rivas-Vaciamadrid City Council has completed the works on Junkal Street, which features a new bidirectional bike lane. The project, with an investment of €347,000, finally connects the East, Centre, and West neighbourhoods.
The improvement and reorganisation works on Junkal Street in Rivas-Vaciamadrid have concluded with the opening of a bidirectional bike lane in the central axis of the roadway. The new layout runs for half a kilometre along the road and leaves four lanes for vehicles, two in each direction, as well as new pavement that enhances road safety.
With this initiative, the three neighbourhoods of Rivas (East, Centre, and West) are now connected by bike lane: it is now possible to cycle between them using the cycling infrastructure. The road previously had no reserved space for bicycles.
The City Council has invested €347,000 in a project coordinated by the Departments of City Maintenance and Citizen Security and Mobility. The works were carried out in July and August to avoid coinciding with the start of the school year, as the Luyfe educational centre is located in the area, generating significant traffic flow during school drop-off and pick-up times.
The new bike lane shares characteristics with the rest of Rivas's cycling network: cyclists are separated from traffic by rubberised raised elements. The design follows the cycling infrastructure recommendations from the Ministry of Transport. The total width is 3.20 metres: 1.10 metres in each direction and 0.50 metres for buffers.
This project completes the first phase of the connection between the Centre and West neighbourhoods, which was also executed in the summer of 2025 on José Hierro Avenue, between the streets of José Saramago and César Manrique. With the redevelopment of Junkal Street, the City Council responds to a citizen demand to unify the cycling network between the West and Centre neighbourhoods.
