San Fernando de Henares demands the Community to rehouse residents of Nazario Calonge

The extraordinary Plenary approves a motion for the regional government to take responsibility for the structural issues in four buildings on Nazario Calonge street, which have necessitated the proposal for their evacuation.

The City Council of San Fernando de Henares has taken a further step in its confrontation with the Community of Madrid over the damages caused by the metro. In an extraordinary Plenary held this Thursday, the municipal Corporation has demanded that the regional government immediately assume all responsibilities arising from the impacts of Line 7B on the properties at Nazario Calonge 12, 14, 16, and 18, where technicians have confirmed extremely serious structural issues.

The City Planning Councillor, Santos Rozalén, explained that municipal reports have led to the initiation of an imminent physical ruin file for those four buildings, with a proposal for evacuation on safety grounds. Furthermore, the immediate cessation of activities at the nursery school located at number 16 has already been decreed.

According to Rozalén, "the issues affecting these homes are directly related to the actions linked to Line 7B of the Metro," an infrastructure for which the regional government is responsible. Therefore, the councillor insisted that "it is the obligation of the competent administration to ensure their safety, protect their rights, and provide immediate and effective responses."

The motion approved in the Plenary, with votes in favour from PSOE, Más Madrid, and Vox, and opposition from the PP, includes several specific demands. Among them, the immediate, dignified re-housing of the affected residents with all guarantees, as well as for the Community of Madrid to fully cover the costs of re-housing, accommodation, storage, and relocations. It also calls for the urgent execution of all necessary technical actions to determine the extent of the damages.

The mayor, Javier Corpa, wanted to show his support for the families: “We will always stand by the residents and defend the general interest of the city, no matter the cost.” The City Council reminds that these four properties add to a long list of issues caused by the metro line, which includes houses already demolished, damages to numerous homes and public spaces, as well as the demolition of public buildings in the El Pilar facilities and the continuous closures of the line since its inauguration.

Meanwhile, the residents of Nazario Calonge continue to await a solution. The City Council has made it clear that it will not relent in its efforts to demand the necessary measures from the regional government to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected families.
