The San Fernando de Henares City Council celebrates the complete reopening of the Justo Gómez Salto Sports Centre on September 26 after a year and a half of renovations due to the floods in March 2025. The free event includes over 40 activities and a match featuring veterans from Real Madrid and Estudiantes.
The Justo Gómez Salto Municipal Sports Centre in San Fernando de Henares resumes its full activity on Saturday, September 26 with a reopening day starting at 10 AM and featuring more than 40 events, all free of charge. The mayor, Javier Corpa, presented the programme on Monday, highlighting the central role of the city's clubs.
The agenda includes tournaments, league matches, exhibitions, and master classes. At 6 PM, the sports entities will take part in a parade at the Justo Gómez Pavilion, and an hour later, at 7 PM, a basketball match will be held between veterans of Real Madrid and Estudiantes, commemorating the match held in September 1992 for the opening of the venue.
The world champion with the Spanish national team in 2023, Claudia Zornoza, will participate in several activities, including a scavenger hunt starting at 10:30 AM. The official plaque unveiling will take place at 12 PM. In the evening, starting at 10 PM, music from Los 40 Session will be set up in front of the main entrance. Attendees will receive a gift at the entrance, and there will be bouncy castles and games for the little ones.
The scheduled events in the pavilion will take place until capacity is reached. The City Council has published the complete programme on its website.
These facilities are very important, frequented by thousands of residents annually, and we want this great celebration to be with our people, who will see a complete renovation that has involved a year and a half of works and a multi-million investment where, in addition to municipal contributions, we have had the collaboration of the central government, which covers 50 percent of the damages.
Corpa has denounced the absence of the Community of Madrid, which is the only administration that has not contributed funds for the reconstruction. "The regional government has helped in other situations of natural disaster, and our city deserves respect," argued the mayor, who described the project as "the largest investment this City Council has made in the last 15 years."
The rains in March 2025 caused a historic rise in the Jarama River, flooding nearly the entire complex. The damages rendered the hydraulic and electrical systems inoperable, preventing any activities from taking place. Repair works began in April 2025 and the venue has been reopening in phases: the indoor heated pool, the multipurpose room, and the Justo Gómez pavilion since October 2025; the fitness room since January 2026; and the outdoor pool since June 2026. The total reopening arrives on September 26.
