The Rivas-Vaciamadrid City Council has allocated €614,000 for repairs and improvements at eleven public schools and the Pippi Langstrump nursery during the summer, in addition to a multi-million investment in climate control.
The Rivas-Vaciamadrid City Council has taken advantage of the school break to carry out improvement works at eleven public schools and the Pippi Langstrump nursery, with an investment of €614,000. The works have included everything from playground repairs and bathroom renovations to the installation of LED lights with presence sensors.
This initiative is part of the climate control project for all public schools in the municipality and the five municipal nurseries, a pioneering project that the City Council has fully funded with municipal funds, without assistance from the Community of Madrid. In this first phase, the schools Luna Lunera, Platero, Rayuela, Pippi Langstrump, and the children's house El Dragón have been equipped, along with four of the 16 schools: Las Cigüeñas, El Olivar, Mario Benedetti, and Jarama. The remaining centres will be climate-controlled in 2027 and 2028.
The investment in climate control amounts to €14.2 million and includes an aerothermal system that will allow temperature regulation both in summer and winter. The mayor, Aída Castillejo, has highlighted the effort made: “The works have posed a significant challenge and a great effort for the City Council and all the staff involved, but the improvement achieved for the students deserves this commitment.”
Issues related to electricity, control, and aesthetics will remain pending, as planned,” explain those from the Department of Education, Childhood, and Youth.
The climate control works will also benefit the more than 7,000 children registered this year in the summer urban camps, which take place from late June to early September. The installing company will be responsible for maintenance for 15 years and will monitor potential adjustments during the first months of operation.
Among the improvement works carried out this summer, the expansion of the nursery playground at José Saramago school, the complete renovation of the bathrooms at Jarama school, and the replacement of the flooring in the nursery pavilion at Las Cigüeñas stand out. At El Parque school, the complete roof replacement of the nursery building, originally scheduled for autumn, has been brought forward to summer.
The cleaning of the centres has been expedited at the end of August so that teaching staff find everything ready on September 1 and students on September 7. During September, tests of the climate control systems will be conducted, and in autumn, aesthetic details will be finalised, as agreed in the school councils.
