Antonio Vicente, Mayor of El Escorial, has expressed his gratitude to the security forces and volunteers who fought the wildfires at the end of July, which threatened the town.
The Mayor of El Escorial, Antonio Vicente, wanted to convey a message of thanks to all those who participated in extinguishing the wildfires that put the Sierra de Madrid on alert at the end of July. In a statement, the mayor highlights his "full gratitude" towards the professionals and volunteers who managed to turn the emergency around.
The days of July 24 and 25 were particularly critical. The advance of the flames forced the preparation of various evacuation scenarios in El Escorial, although the fire ultimately did not enter the municipal area. "Thanks to the great work of a large group of professionals and the decision-making of the authorities, it only resulted in some precautionary alerts," explains Vicente.
The gratitude extends to the State Security Forces and Corps, firefighters, forest agents, and Civil Protection volunteers from the Community of Madrid. He also mentions the personnel from other communities and countries who collaborated in solidarity, as well as the Military Emergency Unit and the Ministry of the Interior.
From the very beginning, the El Escorial City Council made its Local Police and Civil Protection group available to the operation, who worked for days on assistance, information, and logistics. Municipal facilities were also offered, although they were not needed due to the proximity of the fire sources.
The mayor has had special words for the residents of Peralejo, who were evacuated as a precaution, and for the management of the Camping site, for their understanding and cooperation. "The evacuation was precautionary; lives were the priority," he emphasizes. He also thanks the residents of El Escorial who welcomed people from other affected municipalities into their homes.
The fire was extinguished in the border area with Fresnedillas and Zarzalejo, where defence lines were created on the night of July 24. Although El Escorial did not suffer any damage, the fire has burned a large area in neighbouring towns, and the mayor sends a message of support to those affected. Reconstruction measures, driven by the Community of Madrid, are already underway.
