The municipality is part of one of the itineraries in the Sierra Oeste of the new tourist routes programme of the Community of Madrid for those over 65. The initiative will be launched in the first half of 2027 on weekdays.
Residents of Chapinería aged over 65 will be able to participate in one of the tourist routes designed by the Community of Madrid for municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The route will connect Chapinería and Cadalso de los Vidrios and will allow participants to explore churches, palaces, the El Águila Environmental Education Centre, and the La Mezquita archaeological site.
The programme is promoted by the Ministries of Family, Youth and Social Affairs, and Culture, Tourism and Sport, along with the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid. The routes focus on World Heritage Cities, the Villas of Madrid, and the Sierra Oeste, and are scheduled for the first half of 2027 on weekdays, throughout a full day.
In addition to the itinerary starting from Chapinería, the Sierra Oeste will feature a second route between Fresnedillas de la Oliva and Colmenar del Arroyo, with stops at the Lunar Museum, artistic facades, urban poetry spaces, and an exterior visit to the Deep Space Communications Complex in Robledo de Chavela.
The programme includes bus transportation, entry to monuments, museums and other cultural or tourist sites, a guide, and universal accessibility in the activities, transport, and resources included.
The tours of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities will allow visits to Alcalá de Henares, Aranjuez, and San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with stops at the Birthplace of Cervantes, the Regional Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, or the surroundings of the Monastery of El Escorial. The Villas of Madrid include Chinchón, Colmenar de Oreja, Nuevo Baztán, Manzanares el Real, Buitrago del Lozoya, Rascafría, Torrelaguna, and Navalcarnero.
The initiative aims to promote active ageing, encourage coexistence, and expand social interaction opportunities, as well as boost domestic tourism on weekdays. The municipalities will be responsible for publicising the programme and facilitating access.
We will inform about the conditions of participation, dates, and registration procedures when the programme is finalised and all necessary information is available,” according to the Chapinería Town Hall.
