The San Lorenzo de El Escorial Town Hall presents ten commitments for visiting the municipality responsibly and reviews a year of tourism activity.
The Town Hall of San Lorenzo de El Escorial has presented its Ten-Point Guide for Responsible Tourists, an initiative with ten commitments that invites visitors to get to know, enjoy, and contribute to the conservation of the municipality. The presentation coincides with World Tourism Day, which is commemorated on Sunday the 27th.
The ten messages of the guide are: plan your stay, know and value our culture, protect our heritage, respect the natural environment, savour our cuisine, consume local products, move sustainably, reduce your impact, enjoy with awareness, and care for what makes us unique.
The Town Hall aims to convey with this initiative that responsible tourism is not only about reducing the negative impacts of a visit but also about better understanding the destination, valuing what makes it unique, and contributing to its care and local economy.
The presentation of the guide coincides with the review of a year of municipal tourism activity, during which actions have been promoted towards a more sustainable, accessible, diversified, innovative, and territory-linked tourism model.
Among the initiatives developed, the creation of new experiences stands out, such as the literary route dedicated to Teresa Cardona, which allows visitors to approach San Lorenzo de El Escorial through its relationship with literature and urban landscape. This proposal has been complemented by mobile photography workshops, a novel activity that has been very well received.
The programming of guided, character-driven, and theatricalised tours has maintained significant participation, with over 500 registrations, while the IV Heritage Days have brought residents and visitors closer to different aspects of local history and heritage.
In terms of nature and sustainability, the municipality has continued to work on enhancing its natural resources and raising visitor awareness, with initiatives such as Nature Watch Madrid 2025. San Lorenzo de El Escorial has also made progress in its recognition as a sustainable tourism destination.
Accessibility has been another focus of work over the past year, with the enhancement of an Accessible Tourist Itinerary of approximately 2.5 kilometres and low difficulty, designed to facilitate the discovery of the municipality for as many people as possible.
Support for the local economy has been reflected in initiatives to promote craftsmanship, local products, and cuisine, including promotional actions for the traditional bizcotelas and a meeting dedicated to craftsmanship and local production. Tourism modernisation has incorporated new digitalisation tools, such as digital signage actions and systems to better understand visitor flows.
Tourism should contribute to strengthening the identity of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and generate value for those who live in the municipality while offering visitors quality experiences,” declared the mayor, Carlota López.
The new Ten-Point Guide represents an invitation to participate in that model: a tourism that not only attracts visitors but encourages them to know, enjoy, and care for San Lorenzo de El Escorial,” she added.
On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Town Hall aims to make these ten commitments a tool for raising awareness among visitors and residents. The conservation of heritage, respect for nature, local consumption, and coexistence are also part of the travel experience.
