The City Council of San Fernando de Henares has given the Community of Madrid ten days to act following new structural damage on Nazario Calonge street. The mayor, Javier Corpa, denounces that the region is evading its responsibility.
The City Council of San Fernando de Henares has issued an ultimatum to the Community of Madrid: within ten days, it must take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of families who have had to leave their homes on Nazario Calonge street, following the emergence of new structural damage. The execution order, issued by the Urban Planning department of the City Council, demands that the regional administration assume its responsibilities in an area affected for years by Line 7B of the Metro.
The regional government attributes the damage to a broken pipe in one of the buildings, but the technical and administrative background points in another direction. According to the City Council, the area has been subject to ongoing actions derived from the infrastructure: the Community has already demolished buildings from the 'El Pilar' facilities complex, located just a few meters away, has repaired adjacent buildings, and has open files for patrimonial liability. The municipal technical services conclude that this damage is directly related to the impacts of the Metro.
Meanwhile, the City Council has acted urgently to ensure that families are not left unattended. Their relocation has been facilitated, and social and technical support continues to be provided to those affected. Mayor Javier Corpa has been emphatic: “We will not allow those who have suffered the consequences of Line 7B for years to be abandoned by the responsible and competent administration. Our priority is the families, their safety, and the defence of their rights.”
Corpa has reiterated that the City Council will continue to use “all legal and institutional instruments” to demand a definitive solution. In this regard, he lamented that the extraordinary and urgent plenary session on July 30 did not reach unanimous support from the Corporation: the Popular Municipal Group did not support the institutional declaration that called on the Community to assume its responsibilities.
The municipal government denounces the “extremely serious situation” that the families of Nazario Calonge are suffering and reminds that this problem has caused years of damage to homes, demolitions of buildings, impacts on municipal heritage, and a serious social impact. Therefore, it demands an “immediate, coordinated, and definitive” response from the Community of Madrid, with the aim of preventing situations like the current one from recurring.
The ball is now in the court of the regional administration, which has ten days to present actions that guarantee the safety of the people. Meanwhile, the residents of San Fernando de Henares are waiting for the promised solution to become a reality.
