San Lorenzo de El Escorial now has an accessible tourist route that connects the Bus Station with the Historical-Artistic Complex, the Royal Monastery, the Gardens, and La Herrería. The aim is for anyone to be able to explore the main tourist resources of the municipality independently and safely, as reported by the Town Hall.
The work involved redesigning the layout of sidewalks and roadways to ensure sufficient widths for passage and maneuvering space, as well as reducing and properly marking slopes. Pavements have also been demolished and renewed, pedestrian crossings improved with tactile paving and accessible pathways, and crossings redesigned to make walking safer.
Where necessary, support and protection elements such as handrails, stairs, and ramps have been installed. The intervention is completed with the replacement of existing bollards and the repainting of road signage.
The route connects with the parking area of the Plaza de la Constitución and with parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility, facilitating access to the route from various points in the municipality. Additionally, the layout is georeferenced, making it easier to locate and follow.
The execution of the work has been funded by NextGenerationEU for an amount of €264,431.15. This amount is supplemented by €8,445.8 for project management, also covered by these European funds.
The intervention has allowed for an accessible tourist route that can be independently navigated by all individuals, connecting the main urban attractions of the locality with adapted public transport infrastructures," states the municipal announcement.
